IMPORTANT PLACES TO VISIT IN SYROS
Archaeological Museum of Syros
From prehistoric findings to weapons and artwork, this museum contains a vibrant collection of artefacts and objects from Syros and other Cycladic islands, such as Hellenistic inscriptions and sculptures.
The Art Gallery is housed in the former Customs Office warehouses of Ermoupolis and was designed by Erlacher in 1834. It is one of the first public buildings in Greece. There are many works of art and sculptures on display in the Gallery.
The Public Library of Ermoupolis is housed on the ground floor of the Cultural Center. There are many priceless old books such as Argonautica written by Apollonios of Rodios in 1521, Onomastiko of Polydefkous in 1608 by Rakina, Ioustiniani by Prince Rodokanakis-a rare syros edition- and which are kept in a very special place within the museum.
Vamvakaris Museum (Ano Syros)
One should also visit the museum of the great composer Vamvakaris who succeeded in making Greek Rembetiko songs widely known. A bust of the famous composer stands proudly in Vamvakaris Square in Ano Syros.
Reflecting the successful commercial history of the island, the Industrial Museum is comprised of three separate buildings (previously Aneroussis lead factory, Kornilakis tannery and Katsimantis paintworks) within the Technical Cultural Centre, right in the Ermoupolis' industrial zone.
